Term 4 RecyclingWe have been learning about recycling.We know how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

We reused the paper rubbish in our classroom to make paper mache plates.

We had lots of fun reusing boxes and rubbish to make recycled robots. We worked together in teams to create them.

Holiday challenge

Hi room 9, 

I hope your holiday is going well. What beautiful weather we have been having!

If you want to write a story about something exciting you have done in the holidays we would love to share it when we come back. 

I have a challenge for you in the holiday...... could you please start collecting milk bottle tops, juice bottle tops etc for us to use next term. It would be wonderful if you could ask some friends and family to collect them too. I've started collecting and have 3 so far. 

We are learning about recycling in term 2 and hope to make a mural out of our lids.  Let's see how we go. Good luck with the challenge!

Maths in Reading time.

This week our big book was about a scarecrow called Joe. He had a garden with 12 carrots in it but every night some would disappear. He ended up with only 3 left in his garden. Here are our pictures and equations about the story. We love to collaborate when we are learning.

Playdoh Delights in Discovery Time

In discovery time we love to play with the playdoh and create marvelous things.  Mrs Calvert was lucky to be served many delights hand crafted by room 9 chefs. Yummy! Lucky Mrs Calvert!

Spring Walk

Room 9 went on a spring walk around the school this week. We were using our senses to explore the lovely gardens. We looked at the plants, smelled some and touched some plants in the gardens. We listened to the bees buzzing in the lavender.

We took a piece of lavender into the class and looked carefully at it before we drew it then coloured it.  

What a great way to learn outside the classroom!

Micha's Road

Micha was very proud of the road he constructed this week during discovery time. Micha loves to build structures and balances the pieces together very carefully.  

When he had finished it, he asked me to come and see his road then to take a photo for mum! Here you are Micha and Rivka, some wonderful self directed learning. 

Maths Learning in Room 9

At maths time, Room 9 do a word problem of the day. We draw a picture to help us work it out then we write an equation and solve the problem.  

Sometimes we work on the problem with a partner. Here are some of the workings we did this week. It is great to see so many learners collaborating and solving the problems together.

Botanic Gardens Trip

In week 8 we went on a class trip to the Botanic Gardens. It was part of our inquiry - 'Patch to Plate'.

We enjoyed the bus ride and had a wonderful day exploring the gardens.  We had some hands on gardening time too.

Junior Assembly

On Friday we had our junior assembly and shared some of our learning.  Room 9a shared their artwork and stories about people who help us in the community. Room 9 shared their seasons artworks and winter writing. Room 10 had some amazing wallpaper collages of fire engines.  We have been busy with our learning. 

The songs were so much fun. Thanks Mrs Newman for finding them.

A Fire Engine at Sunnyhills School!

It was a beautiful, sunny Wednesday morning when the Howick Fire Brigade came to visit us at Sunnyhills School. We were really lucky to climb inside the fire engine and have a look around. 

Fireman Paddy and Fireman Chris showed us the special clothes they wear when they put out fires. They put on their boots and pants, then their jacket.  They wear a special mask under their helmets to protect their face, ears and neck.  Their helmet and breathing mask is really important too.  Firemen even wear gloves so none of their skin is showing.

Thank you Howick Fire Brigade! We really enjoyed your visit and learnt more about fire safety! You are AWESOME!

Gymnastics Term 3

Room 9 and room 9a's Assembly is on Friday!

Room 9 and Room 9a will be presenting the junior assembly on Friday 28th August.  We are learning songs about firefighters.  We will be singing them with the other junior classes. 

Now we can practice at home too.

Safe journeys - Fireman Matt visits

This week we had a visit from Matt Evans, a fireman. He talked to us about fire safety.  

We learnt what to when there is a fire. 

We need to get down, get low and get out fast! We get down because 'Fresh air is down there.' 

We shout "Fire, fire, fire!"

When we get out we need to meet at our safe meeting place, our letter box. 


We also learnt that we need smoke alarms in;

• every bedroom

• the hallway

• the lounge.  

We checked our own house to see where our smoke alarms were. We think 'smoke alarms save lives.'

Safe Journeys - Police visit

We have been learning about people in our community who help to keep us safe.  


We had a visit at school from 
Constable Hodder, a police officer.  
He taught us how to cross the road safely.

We need to stop, look and listen before we cross.  This is room 9 practising in the hall then crossing the road.

Making Vegetable Soup

This term we have been learning about ''Growing Things'' and 'Winter' so Room 9a combined them and decided to make yummy vegetable soup.
Each child brought a vegetable to school to put in our soup.
We talked about the vegetables first then we washed our hands.
We washed, peeled and chopped our vegetables and put them into Mrs Newman's crock pot.

Then we put the crock pot in the staff room and turned it on. Our soup cooked all day.

The next day Mrs Newman turned the soup back on to heat it up again.

We read the story 'Stone Soup' and ate our vegetable soup for lunch. 

It was delicious and full of yummy vegetables.

Paper Airplanes

Yesterday Lawrence was a fantastic leader in Room 9. He taught us how to make a paper airplane. We had to follow the instructions step by step. When we finished we went out to the courts and flew them. We had a competition to see who's flew the furthest. Ethan and Hayden won!

Max's Grandad and Auntie came in to show us some medals and Anzac treasures from their family.
We wore poppies to remember the soldiers who died in the war.

Circles Math Group

We have been learning how to use Puppet Pals on the iPads. We have to get a buddy to take a photo of our face. Then we take a photo of our work and record our voice. We have to read clearly.
